El mural titulado "The Catholic Worker" representa una marcha pacífica del movimiento homónimo, originado en Estados Unidos durante la década de 1930 y fundado por Dorothy Day y Peter Maurin. Situado en el sector 4 de La Cañada Real Galiana, este proyecto artístico surge como una iniciativa colaborativa que busca involucrar activamente a los vecinos.
No quería que fuera solo arte, sino un espacio de diálogo y encuentro. Personas como Sabah y Mohamed, junto con muchos niños y otros vecinos, me ayudaron durante todo el proceso, dándole al mural un significado mucho más profundo. Para mí, este mural habla de la vida de cada uno: «hay un momento en que nos encontramos y juntos hacemos algo bello que mejora nuestra vida».
Durante esta experiencia pude conectar con los vecinos, comprender sus luchas, sueños y esperanzas. Me sorprendió que, en una comunidad con tantas necesidades, me pidieran pintar un mural. Esa confianza en mí me hizo entender que el arte es vital y que es precisamente en estos contextos donde más se necesita.

The mural titled The Catholic Worker represents a peaceful march of the homonymous movement, which originated in the United States during the 1930s and was founded by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin. Located in Sector 4 of the Cañada Real Galiana, this artistic project emerged as a collaborative initiative aimed at actively involving the residents.
I didn’t want it to be just art, but a space for dialogue and connection. People like Sabah and Mohamed, along with many children and other neighbors, helped me throughout the process, giving the mural a much deeper meaning. For me, this mural speaks of everyone’s life: “there is a moment when we meet and together we create something beautiful that improves our lives.”
During this experience, I was able to connect with the neighbors, understand their struggles, dreams, and hopes. I was surprised that in a community with so many needs, they asked me to paint a mural. That trust in me made me realize that art is vital, and that it is precisely in these contexts that it is needed the most.

El arte social tiene el poder de transformar vidas y comunidades. Desafía el status quo, visibiliza realidades marginadas, educa y fomenta la interacción social. No es solo decoración; es una herramienta necesaria, capaz de crear soluciones donde las normas institucionales no llegan. A través del arte podemos ofrecer espacios donde las personas se sientan escuchadas, reconocidas y dignas, y generar momentos de belleza, esperanza y humanidad, incluso en los contextos más difíciles.

Sabah fue fundamental para el proyecto del mural. Desde el primer día que llegué al sector 4, este joven de origen sirio, que huyó de Alepo durante la guerra de Siria junto a su familia, se convirtió en mi compañero inseparable. Estuvo a mi lado durante las casi tres semanas que dedicamos a pintar la obra en pleno verano.
Su importancia no se limitó a la ayuda física; su presencia y su confianza hicieron posible que la obra cobrara vida. Sabah se convirtió en compañero y amigo, y nuestra relación ha perdurado más allá del mural. Para mí, conocer a las personas y el lugar es esencial antes de crear una obra: la cercanía y la colaboración fueron clave para que el mural tuviera un significado verdadero.

Sabah was fundamental to the mural project. From the very first day I arrived in Sector 4, this young man of Syrian origin, who fled Aleppo during the Syrian war with his family, became my inseparable companion. He stayed by my side throughout the nearly three weeks we spent painting the work in the height of summer.
His importance was not limited to physical help; his presence and trust made it possible for the mural to come to life.Sabah became both a companion and a friend, and our relationship has endured beyond the mural itself. For me, getting to know the people and the place is essential before creating a work: closeness and collaboration were key for the mural to hold a true and meaningful significance.

Creo en el poder del arte como un puente hacia realidades que a menudo permanecen al margen. Para mí, el arte no es solo una forma de expresión, sino una manera de acercarme a lo invisible, de atravesar lo superficial y revelar la belleza que existe incluso en los contextos más olvidados.
Entiendo el arte como una herramienta para mostrar la verdad y la humanidad que tantas veces se pierden entre estigmas y prejuicios. A través de él, busco mirar de frente, comprender y dar voz a aquello que muchos prefieren no ver.

I believe in the power of art as a bridge to realities that often remain on the margins. For me, art is not just a form of expression, but a way to approach the unseen, to move beyond the superficial and reveal the beauty that exists even in the most forgotten contexts.
I understand art as a tool to reveal the truth and humanity that are so often lost amid stigma and prejudice. Through it, I seek to face things directly, to understand, and to give voice to what many choose not to see.
